The COVID-19 pandemic has affected college students’ basic needs, financial security, academic success, caregiving responsibilities, mental health, and more. Using data from the Trellis Fall 2020 Student Financial Wellness Survey (SFWS), Trellis researchers found that 53 percent of surveyed students (n=20,095) at 62 two- and four-year colleges and universities indicated one or more forms of basic needs insecurity (BNI) at time of administration. This brief, recently published in the Journal of Student Financial Aid, examines data from these students with a special lens on their mental health, familial responsibilities and finances, employment, and financial security.
